Governance
Automotive
In 2019, Škoda Auto took the bold step of establishing a new design team to revamp its digital landscape portfolio. This marked the beginning of the Flow Design System (DS) journey.
As the team grew and evolved, it became apparent that a refreshing design identity was needed to bring cohesion to the brand. In 2022, we partnered with Strichtpunkt to introduce a new identity tightly integrated into the Flow DS.

The Challenge of Mapping Digital Landscape
As we continue to explore more products within the Škoda Auto ecosystem, we face the daunting task of mapping their digital landscape.
With over 20 products disconnected from our design system, we're constantly seeking innovative ways to incorporate them and transfer knowledge to teams.
To address this challenge, we've established cooperation and contribution models with other product teams and via the feedback loop we were able to keep improving the governance.
— Part 1
Effective governance is crucial for the success of any DS. We strive to provide seamless access to resources, ensuring that designers and developers can easily find answers to their questions.
Our contribution model allows new components and patterns to be added to the system, with a focus on streamlining the process for contributing teams.
Moreover, we prioritize recurring onboarding sessions, workshops, and presentations to foster collaboration and communication between teams.
— Part 2
Our design system has been shaped by the collective efforts of multiple designers over its lifespan. While consistency was a challenge due to frequent team changes, every designer left their mark, resulting in an overall well-built system that adheres to best practices for accessibility, auto layout, and grid design.
— Part 3
The crown jewel of Škoda's DS Ecosystem is its extensive documentation. We've invested significant time into mapping component behavior, states, and usage guidelines, creating a single source of truth for applying the brand's look and feel across various products. This meticulous approach has been essential in catering to Škoda's global presence, with multiple businesses operating in different countries and languages.
